How to Differentiate Between Anxiety Attacks and Panic Attacks?
Anxiety is a disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. Be it anxiety about a situation or chronic anxiety, a lot of people experience it on a daily basis. A lot of people now are recognising and becoming aware of the importance of mental health. They are acknowledging their struggles and seeking help for it. However, there is still a need for mental health awareness to help people distinguish and recognise their experiences better. For instance, there is little knowledge about the correct difference between anxiety and a panic attack. Mistaking in identifying or diagnosing disorders can delay the help required. So, in this blog we shall explore the difference between anxiety and panic attacks.
Anxiety is a feeling of worry and distress in anticipation of something. a feeling of worry and distress. However, anxiety may be due to a real experience, perceived threat, or even in anticipation of an event. Panic attacks, on the other hand, are sudden and intense feelings of fear. These could be due to a trigger, or not. Symptoms of panic attacks manifest more physically. Palpitations, chest aches, dizziness, shortness of breath are common symptoms during a panic attack. This also causes the body to shift into fight-or-flight response. The symptoms are so severe that there is a feeling that you might die or lose your mind. However, anxiety is characterized majorly with worry, distress, and fear of uncertainty.
When a clinician diagnoses an individual with a disorder, they use a standard manual to accurately identify a disorder. However, we encourage you to seek help when in distress, irrespective of the severity of the situation. Seeking help early can ensure that the distressor is acknowledged and worked through before it could turn into a disorder or chronic experience.
