In many ways, psychological testing and assessment are similar to medical tests. If a patient has physical symptoms, a primary doctor may order X-rays or blood tests to understand what’s causing those symptoms.
Psychological evaluations serve the same purpose. Psychologists use tests and other assessment tools to measure and observe a client’s behavior to arrive at a diagnosis and guide treatment. The results of the tests help inform and develop a treatment plan.
Psychological testing is not a single test or even a single type of test. It encompasses a whole body of dozens of research-backed tests and procedures of assessing specific aspects of a person’s psychological makeup. Some tests are used to determine IQ, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Developmental Delays and Personality etc.
